Strategies for Sustainability

Managing PFAS in the Supply Chain

Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of chemicals used for a variety of commercial applications from as early as the 1950’s. Their use across multiple industries stems from their unique properties and performance, which are directly related to their multiple carbonfluorine (C-F) bonds. C-F bonds are highly stable, making PFAS remarkably durable. Due to the electronegative properties of the
fluorine atom, these substances often exhibit high levels of water repellence. These useful characteristics can be enhanced by increasing the number of C-F bonds, leading to the creation of chemicals that are both highly durable and water repellent. This is particularly useful for creating products with higher resistance to oil and stains.

However, the desirable characteristics of PFAS can also make them harmful, as research has shown that some PFAS are hazardous. This is underscored by their inclusion in the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list published in accordance with Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and their hazardous classification under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on the classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP regulation).

Concerns about the potential harmful effects of PFAS have led to the development of global legislation to regulate their use and minimise impacts. This white paper will provide insights into what PFAS are; their uses and hazards; what is being done to mitigate their impacts; and what you can do to identify and reduce the impacts of PFAS within your supply chain.
