Since its inception in 2011, the ZDHC community has had a steadfast commitment to promoting the use of safer, more sustainable chemistry - driving impactful changes across the entire value chain. Their efforts have centred around improving the profile of functional chemicals used in the production of apparel and footwear, ensuring a more sustainable future for the industry.
In 2024, ZDHC released their first guideline on the use of commodity chemicals in the processing of textile, leather, apparel, and footwear. Commodity chemicals are the basic chemicals used in processing to create a certain condition or to aid a specific process, such as acids and bases. While these chemicals don’t typically make it into the final product, it is well understood that they contain high levels of impurities which may be hazardous and listed on the ZDHC Manufacturing Restricted Substance List (MRSL) - making this guideline a significant step toward becoming more planet conscious and responsible industries.
Ensuring compliance with the MRSL for commodity chemicals is undoubtedly a challenge—especially since these chemicals can damage the sensitive instruments used to detect MRSL substances. To help businesses overcome this challenge, Eurofins Sustainability Services has developed an innovative testing method to assess hazardous substances and effectively manage MRSL risks in your commodity chemicals.
